Every year I make a pillar candle dedicated to Samhain, the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the darker half of the year. I collect herbs from the very last harvest of my gardens and recite incantations over them and slowly add them to beeswax. I use beeswax for this candle because this is the time of year bees return to their colony for the long winter ahead. They don’t hibernate like most mammals do. They all get very close to one another and flex their flight muscles to create just enough heat for them to survive. I wanted to incorporate that survival energy into this candle because the veil is at its thinnest and it’s a special time for us to honor our ancestors and friends who have passed. Light and Dark. Summer and Winter. Life and Death. The herbal allies in this candle are angelica, yellowdock, mugwort, sweet wormwood, ginger, clove, cinnamon, star anise and mullein. I only made a few.
